Survivor 47 Episode 13 - Positives and Negatives of Remaining Players & Ranking Winner Contenders

So, last week we said farewell to my winner pick and disaster prince Andy, a truly heartbreaking and ironic turn of events even though we all knew he was going to go in the aftermath of Operation: Italy, but I don't think anyone expected him to go like THAT. Shooting himself in the foot while trying to earn respect, only to earn so much respect that it gets him idoled out? What an Andy way to go. So poetic. I could appreciate it through my tears.

We also lost ice queen Genevieve at 5th, which I also predicted, and it was sad to see her go, especially when I had just started to like her only a couple episodes before her departure...but such is the way things go on Survivor.

Now we're down to four, so let's take one last look at everyone's edits before the finale.

#1. Rachel (13:8)

Positives
  • "we won as a community" quote
  • from the complex tribe (gata)
  • gained strategic visibility during the merge
  • gets a lot of advantages and is shown using them in smart ways, like the shot in the dark move which she then got to explain fully with flashbacks in the next episode
  • high confessional time (26:38 mins) and gets to narrate some big events
  • solid underdog story (fighting to survive)
  • flashback sequence clearly establishes her and Andy as the complex duo of the season
  • production went out of their way to recreate rice moment because it told us something about her
  • "I want to be the ocean" quote was very winner-y
  • showed decent jury management in the last two tribals (does the jury buy it?)
  • won two individual immunities
  • idoling out Andy was a great move for her (something for her resume)
  • everyone is saying she's a threat (even Jeff) and that she's going to win
 Negatives

  • late confessional in premiere
  • opening credit shot is super brief and she's looking away
  • not much emotional/personal content (she's very flat and toneless)
  • struggles with social game (her bad lying to Genevieve)
  • did not get her way with gabe, kyle or caroline going home (although she did say she didn't care about the order)
  • didn't get an emotional confessional check-in at the beginning of Ep.11 when lots of the other major players had one
  • got blindsided by andy three times and has been on the outs so many times
  • everyone is saying she's a threat (even Jeff) and that she's going to win (is this too obvious?)

Possible Placements: 4th, 2nd, 1st

#2. Sam (10:3)

Positives

  • was introduced in the opening minutes of premiere with a backstory package
  • "wolf in wolf's clothing"
  • member of the complex tribe (gata)
  • great intro shot
  • high confessional time (23:50 mins)
  • jeff talked to him at tribal and related him directly to the community theme
  • got some good emotional content during the letters from home segment
  • worked with Andy and Genevieve to make a major move against the majority alliance (great for his resume)
  • has been playing a strong, scrappy underdog game even with 10 votes against him
  • NTOS visibility is the highest out of everyone left

Negatives
  • didn't get his strategic way (his plan to get Sue failed)
  • was pressured into giving up his shot in the dark (didn't look good for him)
  • his scene with Genevieve explaining to her his reasoning for targeting her was cut (would this have been kept in if he wins?)
Possible Placements: 2nd, 1st

#3. Teeny (9:7)

Positives

  • got a mat chat
  • got a lot of focus in the premiere
  • great intro shot
  • gets a lot of narrative content even when it doesn't directly involve them
  • gets lots of emotional content (we're shown how they feel a lot)
  • likeability is super high, great SPV - especially in pre-merge
  • still has a decent confessional time (21:07 mins)
  • GOT A BACKSTORY PACKAGE!
  • was asked Jeff a question at tribal council about community - the theme of the season

Negatives

  • has lost everyone they've tried to work with (had to vote out their #1 ally)
  • weaker strategically (has had to acquiesce to the larger group a lot)
  • might not have the resume to garner votes at the end
  • fire imagery (e.g. burnt bag) could foreshadow a FMC loss
  • refusing to see that Rachel could beat them in jury votes was a very bad strategic read
  • the sam "tantrum" wasn't a good look and the edit had no problems dunking on them for it
  • is now on the outs (again) and doesn't trust anyone

Possible Placements: 4th, 3rd

#4. Sue (6:5)

Positives

  • "i'm 59 and i beat all your asses" quote
  • victory pose in opening credits
  • narrative story of being underestimated by men
  • some personal content (pilot)
  • jeff talked to her when she won immunity
  • emotional monologue at the Final 8 immunity challenge

Negatives

  • backstory package was cut
  • had a 0 confessional episode POST-MERGE in an ep where it was a TUKU ONLY TRIBAL
  • was clowned on HARD by the edit with that Kyle montage
  • negative SPV from Andy & Genevieve talking about how she's easy to beat at the end
  • lowest confessional time of the ones left (13:30 mins)

Possible Placements: 4th, 3rd

My prediction for the finale is that Sue will be our fire-making loser. Someone said her edit reminded them of Katurah and I definitely see it. Teeny is our Charlie Brown of the season, our lovable but down on their luck zero vote finalist.
When it comes to runner-up and winner, I'm torn between Rachel and Sam. I think both have qualities that can put them in either; Sam is a prominent presence in the season, while Rachel has been a lot more hidden and has more holes in her edit than Sam does right now. Sam's performance in last week's episode was also really good for his chances, he successfully got Genevieve out and saved himself. There's also that scene of him making fun of Rachel and Gen for being so confident that they'll win and his response to that being "that's not gonna happen". However, there's always a chance Sam is the runner-up and decoy to keep Rachel from being too painfully obvious (even though she already is). But if I had to choose a winner...I think I'll go with the majority/my head and say Rachel is the winner. But my heart is saying Sam! 💖
